River Thames between Putney Bridge and Mortlake
In a long standing tradition, with a high level of competitive spirit, the country's two oldest and best known universities' rowing teams race over the course between Putney Bridge and Mortlake on the River Thames. The race was first run in 1829 and now attracts around 250,000 spectators each year. The race itself, over four and a quarter miles, takes between 16 to 18 minutes but there is a tremendous atmosphere built up around the race that extends (weather permitting) well beyond the end of the race itself. The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Rate web site includes a useful section on best vantage points to watch the race.

Peter & The Wolf is one of the most enduring pieces of classical music for children. The popular piece by Sergey Prokofiev uses the tale of the small boy, Peter, and his desire to defeat the savage wolf as a way to introduce children to instuments of the orchestra. Each instrument plays a different character, so that the distinct sounds formed are appreciated by the audience. Narrated by actor MacKenzie Crook, this is a magical experience for children of all ages and well worth including in your Easter Weekend.

The organisers have published an extremely useful guide for those intending to watch, which includes a table of approximate times at each potential point, as well as other useful information. The marathon is a gruelling and challenging run for all of the participants, most of whom seek sponsorship that leads to raising a lot of money for very deserving charities, so do please support those running, if only by cheering them along to the finish line.

Tate Modern, Bankside, London, SE1 9TG
Damien Hirst first attracted atention as an up and coming "Young British Artist" in 1988 with "Freeze" - an exhibition in a disused wharehouse to show off his own work and that of several friends at Goldsmiths College. Since then he has gone on to worldwide aclaim and is widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of his generation. Damien Hirst at the Tate Modern is, strangely, the first major exhibition of his work in a British museum and it brings together all of his best known works of the last 20 years, This is an exceptional opportunity to appreciate the works which have made Damien Hirst a household name.

Kew Gardens, Kew Rd, Richmond TW9 3AB
Lesser known of the royal palaces, Kew Palace is a brick building with a distinctly Dutch style about it and has one very notable place in British history as it was here that King George III was confined in the eighteenth century during the mysterious and debilitating illness that he suffered - unknown at the time, it was simply referred to as "madness" (hence the film title "The Madness of King George") but may well have been porphyria. George III is notable for other aspects of his life, such as the 15 children he fathered with Queen Charlotte and there is an audio visual display about these. Also, for the first time this year, the Royal Kitchens are being opened to the public.
