This is a remarkable 20th century opera by the Czech composer Janacek, which depicts a slow Russian Summer, a trapped wife and the devastating impact of an affair and which comes back to the English National Opera in the very safe hands of director David Alden.
Patricia Racette makes her debut with the English National Opera with this exceptional piece and performance – sung in English - which gives the opera an accessible though not simplistic feel, is a tragedy but does not go to excess whilst displaying a raw emotion whilst it explores the lives of the characters in the steppes that surround them, exploring the impact of sexual morality on a small, close-knit community. David Alden's staging of Janacek's Jenufa won two Olivier awards on its first appearance in 2006.
