Real van Gogh The Artist and his letters London 2010

This major new exhibition on the life and times of van Gogh features a rare chance to see and read many of the artist's letters - rarely seen because of their fragile condition - although just 35 on loan from the van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam which has 120 of van Gogh's letters viewable online. There is also around 70 paintings and 30 drawings that illustrate the artist’s sentiments and feelings expressed in his letters.

Van Gogh is undoubtedly one of the world's best known artists and reproductions of his paintings such as his sunflower sell worldwide. There are also popular myths about his mental state, reinforced by the well known ear cutting episode, many of which are laid to rest by van Gogh's own accounts revealed in the letters displayed. The paintings and drawings at this major exhibition are on loan from the van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and from major galleries around the world and include the famous self portrait of van Gogh as an artist, as well as still life scenes, landscapes and much more.
